Profile text

Joost Jonker's research focuses on business and finance from the 16th century to the present. He main interest is the interaction between firms, markets, business leaders and the government during any given period. His publications range from short biographies of Dutch businessmen, a co-written monograph on international trading companies to an analysis of the 19th century Amsterdam money market. He also co-authored the recent comprehensive history of Royal Dutch Shell and is currently working on the evolution of financial markets in pre-industrial Europe. At present he runs, together with Oscar Gelderblom, the NWO-ESF programme Evolution of Financial Markets in Early Modern Europe.
